Easter Island

Are you a person interested in archaeology? Do you enjoy learning about ancient cultures? Do you like those weird mysterious legends? If you are, you would probably have heard of a deserted little island in the South Pacific called the Easter island.

Not all that much is known about this deserted and mysterious little island and about the people who used to live in it. One thing we know for sure about the Easter island is that it has a history of volcanic activity. The island itself is actually considered to be a part of huge volcano. It’s situated more than 2000 miles away from Chile and most consider it to be one of the most isolated places on planet earth.

Easter island is not the historical name that was used for this island. Since the first European who set foot on it arrived there on the Easter Sunday, the island got christened as Easter island. If you want to see the big, mysterious and somewhat sinister looking statues there, you could go there for a visit from Santiago. The trip from Santiago to the Easter island would probably cost you less than $900. If you are no big fan of historical sites however, this might not be such a good idea as there is little more to see other than objects of historical value.

It is not that hard to imagine why Easter island is so uninhabited. It doesn’t have the necessary natural resources enough for even most animals to survive. Those environmentalists who campaign for conservation of natural resources might be very pleased to know, that Easter island is a good example to prove their arguments. This is because the island’s resources were probably over exploited some where in the past leading to the destruction of life that existed there.

Maybe the most mysterious thing about the Easter island is the statues that are there. No one can say for sure how or why they were built and there still much speculation surrounding the topic. Some even say that the island is part of a lost continent though there doesn’t seem to be much evidence to support these wild and fanciful theories. Naturally some even believe in the theory surrounding alien conspiracies but few have taken such extreme opinions seriously.

If you like to witness the glory of this historical site, you should visit the Easter island the next time you find yourself in Santiago. It might be an unforgettable experience.
